01 -Problem Statement

Apartment parking is open. Every vehicle suffers for it.

Motorcycles and cars parked outdoors deteriorate faster than those kept in covered spaces—yet most urban vehicle owners lack access to a garage, carport, or affordable cover solution.

Most apartment complexes in Indian cities allocate open, uncovered parking bays—no canopy, no shade, and no protection from rain, sun, or bird damage. Residents are left to improvise with tarpaulins that trap moisture, blow off in wind, and invite theft. Rustang was designed from the ground up as a fixed shelter that bolts permanently into an existing bay — closing the gap without requiring the owner to do anything each time they park

74%

of apartment complexes in Tier 1 and Tier 2 Indian cities offer only open, uncovered parking bays with no weather protection.

₹18,000+

average annual cost of weather-related repairs — paint oxidation, rust, UV cracking, and electrical damage — for vehicles parked outdoors.

3×

faster surface degradation for vehicles in open apartment bays vs. covered parking, according to automotive body shop data across 6 cities.

02 - Market Opportunity

Three apartment-parking user profiles, one fixed solution

Research across apartment complexes in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad surfaced three recurring resident profiles — each sharing the same exposure problem but with distinct vehicle types, parking tenure, and spending authority.

01

Individual Apartment Owner

Resident with an allotted open bay in a gated society. Parks a car or bike daily in a fully exposed slot — no canopy, no shade. Wants permanent protection without involving the building committee.

PRIMARY PAIN

Paint fading, rust, and bird-dropping damage on a vehicle they park in the same spot every day

WILLINGNESS TO BUY

₹15,000–32,000 for a one-time fixed install

02

Housing Society / RWA

Resident Welfare Association that manages 50–500 open parking bays in a gated complex. Wants to upgrade open bays as a society amenity — negotiated bulk deal, uniform appearance across bays.

PRIMARY PAIN

Resident complaints about vehicle damage and a parking area that looks neglected

WILLINGNESS TO BUY

₹10,000–14,000/bay on a society bulk contract

03

Builder / Developer

Real-estate developer who specifies open parking in new apartment projects. Can pre-install Rustang bays as a premium amenity — differentiated at possession and valued in resale.

PRIMARY PAIN

Open parking is a known buyer objection; no affordable covered-bay solution at scale

WILLINGNESS TO BUY

Per-bay specification contract at project stage

03 - User Research

Research methods that bridged UX and industrial design

Resident Interviews

Owners with allotted open bays across gated societies in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Focused on damage experience, existing workarounds, and openness to a permanent bay upgrade.

Society Parking Audits

On-site walkthroughs of open parking areas. Documented bay dimensions, surface type, overhead clearance, existing canopies, and degree of weather exposure across different bay positions.

RWA Committee Interviews

Conversations with Resident Welfare Associations about amenity upgrade processes, procurement authority, common-area aesthetics, and willingness to sponsor a bulk-bay deal.

Prototype Bay Install

Full-scale steel arch installed in a real open bay at a society in Chennai. Residents evaluated fit, appearance, and weather performance over a 6-week period including a monsoon event.

Key Insights

Purchase Driver

Every resident who had repainted or repaired their vehicle due to weather damage converted to a high-intent buyer within the same conversation. Prior loss is the strongest signal.

Incumbent Failure

"I put a tarpaulin but it blew off and scratched the car worse than the rain would have." Mentioned by 18 of 28 residents. Tarpaulins are the incumbent — and actively distrusted.

Decision Blocker

"If the society approves it, I'll pay for my bay tomorrow." RWA approval is the primary gating factor — residents are willing but need collective sanction to modify a shared-space bay.

RWA Insight

RWA committees respond to aesthetic uniformity above all else. A shelter that makes one bay look different from the rest will be rejected regardless of function.

Segmentation Signal

Residents in corner or end bays — fully exposed on two sides — show 2× higher willingness to pay than residents in shaded or semi-covered bays. Bay position is a targeting variable.

04-Competitive Landscape

What apartment residents resort to — and why each fails

05 - Design Principles

Four constraints that drove every design decision

Zero Daily Effort

Research showed that any solution requiring a daily action is abandoned within two weeks. Rustang eliminates the action entirely — once installed, it protects without owner involvement.

All-Weather Seal

A gasket-sealed front edge and rear drain channel prevent rain pooling. The ventilated side panels maintain airflow to eliminate trapped moisture and prevent condensation rust.

Vehicle-Agnostic Fit

A modular tension-arch frame adjusts to motorcycle, scooter, and compact car profiles. Elastic perimeter seals accommodate mirrors, exhausts, and spoilers without tearing.

Minimal Ground Footprint

The shelter's arch profile is engineered to sit within a standard 2.5m × 1.2m parking bay. No additional ground space, no wall drilling — it anchors to the bay surface via four ground bolts.

06- Product Design

Anatomy of the Rustang shelter system

Six engineered features derived directly from research constraints

PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE
Arch frame fit-check — fabrication workshop
FROM RENDER TO REALITY

The steel arch prototype was fabricated and test-fitted over a compact SUV within 8 weeks of the concept being finalised — validating the bay-footprint dimensions and two-person installation process.

Aerodynamic Arch Shell

Derived from automotive drag coefficient modelling. The tapered arch reduces wind uplift force by 62% vs. flat canopy solutions — critical for permanent outdoor exposure.

UV-400 Polymer Skin

Outer layer blocks 99.9% of UV-A and UV-B radiation. Rated for 10+ years of continuous outdoor exposure without yellowing, warping, or surface brittleness.

Four-Point Ground Anchor

Stainless ground bolts fix the shelter permanently to any concrete, tarmac, or paver surface. Rated to resist sustained 120km/h wind without supplementary support.

Passive Ventilation Ports

Gill-shaped vents on the side panels create passive airflow when ambient temperature exceeds 28°C — eliminating the condensation rust caused by sealed enclosures.

Integrated Security Anchor

A hardened steel loop welded into the base frame accepts a chain or ground anchor lock, adding a fixed theft deterrent to the shelter structure itself.

One-Time Installation

A two-person installation takes under 90 minutes using only common tools. No planning permits required for the residential version — it sits within the existing bay boundary.

07- Outcome & Reflection

Designing a fixed product taught me that the best UX is the one you never notice

Designing for apartment open-parking shifted the problem entirely. Residents aren't looking for a cover they carry — they want to stop thinking about the problem. That reframe, from portable product to permanent bay infrastructure, changed every downstream decision: material spec, installation process, RWA approval flow, and pricing model. The most important insight from research: the RWA committee, not the individual resident, is the real gatekeeper for the society segment. Design for committee approval first — aesthetics, uniformity, maintenance-free operation — and individual desire follows.

What Research Validated

The fixed-installation model was initially resisted by participants who assumed it would require permits or structural work. Once they saw the bay-footprint install, 21 of 24 said they would choose it over any portable alternative. Zero daily friction is a decisive differentiator.

Structural Constraints

The aerodynamic arch profile that performs best in wind-tunnel modelling requires a minimum 1.4m clearance above the vehicle — limiting the Moto S to driveways with at least 1.7m overhead clearance. A site assessment checklist became a necessary pre-sale step.

Next Steps: Live Pilot

The next phase is a full-scale HDPE shell installed in a real residential bay for a 6-month monsoon-cycle test. Three housing societies have agreed to participate. A pre-registration page attracted 340 signups in 2 weeks without paid promotion.
